Buildings for books: Contemporary library architecture

Libraries are spaces for learning, discovery, and also for interaction. Their architecture is currently the subject of much discussion, as the demands on these cornerstones of modern civilization have changed enormously since they have had to meet the requirements of the new multimedia and digital age. The library as an institution underwent a real image change from an introverted knowledge repository to a globally networked information provider and communication mediator.
The architectural expression of this expanded and constantly evolving profile of requirements makes library construction extremely multi-layered and complex. But this is also precisely the source of enormous potential for bold designs and ingenious aesthetic concepts. Whether involving new buildings, conversions or extensions, this volume shows the diversity of this building task with its interplay of state-of-the-art technology and cultural demands. -
Ephemeral buildings take possession of a location for a specific period of time, adding meaning and new quality to it. They can be interim solutions that no longer serve a purpose after a certain point, or projects and settings created for special occasions. Temporary architecture frequently possesses an experimental character, which presents new perceptions of the functions and potentials of buildings, open spaces and rooms. Its transitory nature turns the attention in a very specific and precise way to what is essential and makes distinct design statements.
This volume gathers extraordinary contemporary projects from the very diverse areas of temporary architecture. Most of these concepts transgress the borderlines of architecture, art, design and social intervention, which results in a very unique form of creative freedom.

The vision of living on water has recently become a professional focus among architects and urban planners. Climatic change, the rise of the sea level, and the constantly increasing global population are issues that render treating water surfaces as settlement areas as topical as never before.
Built on Water introduces innovative projects that include a wide range of building types based on very different approaches to handling water as the base for buildings - whether as floating or fixed constructions, as new buildings or for reusing existing structures. The different ways of dealing with water as an architectural element, turns this volume into a source of inspiration and comprehensive compendium of the visionary concepts for a future on and with water.

Their function as a link between two or more places over otherwise impassable obstacles distinguishes bridges from all other types of structures or buildings. In the history of mankind, they have evolved with a great variety of profiles and construction menthods. Today, new technologies allow the implementation of projects with previously unattainable shapes and sizes.
Link it! features projects that combine sophisticated engineering skills with demanding esthetic concepts. It includes the work of established specialists as well as designs that were created by architects who usually focus on other sectors. All bridges share one characteristic - their outstanding qualities turn them into symbols of a city or an entire region.

Pure shapes, simple lines, clear geometry - minimalism focuses on the necessities. It places emphasis on a plain and obvious message rather than on superfluous details. A steel wave suggests movement and rapidity, plain glass introduces transparency, large openings are sources of space and light - refinement has become the new means of expression.
Each single detail becomes significant and a key element of the project. Shape, material and consistency exclusively at the service of function - the result can be admired in the extremely innovative and honest contemporary buildings, which reveal minimalism as an attitude aiming at abstraction, functionalism and purification. -

Light is a prerequisite for architecture, since it is the element that renders walls and spaces visible. With the right light, well-designed buildings and interiors are considerably enhanced. In recent years, supported by groundbreaking technological innovations, the use of light in architecture and interior design has become more creative, lively and colorful than ever. Not only have these developments allowed for more artistry in the field, but lighting design has also become part of energy-saving concepts.
Light in Architecture presents 123 projects by architects and designers all around the world, where the use of natural and artificial light is the defining element: the C42 Showroom in Paris, the Air Traffic Control Tower in Vienna, the Supperclub in Singapore, the Green-pix Zero Energy Wall in Beijing, the Ave Maria Chapel in Naples, FL, the Koukjian Jewelry in Beirut and the Deloitte Headquarters in Copenhagen - this volume allows every imaginable use of light in every sector to shine. -

"Public art is one of the most important elements that define a city. Public installations echo the character and spirit of a time and place, and remind us all of the imperative need for creativity and imagination in our daily lives." (Carole Feuerman)
Art has always made a substantial contribution to cultural identity. This impact is considerably enhanced when a work of art is created for a public place and takes on a space-defining function. Whatever the shape, size or medium, art in public, accessible to all, attracts attention. Its presence provokes thought, questions assumptions, expresses values, and adds new qualities to communities and cities.
In this volume, selected works introduce the history of public art over 4,500 years of historical eras and styles, including world-famous landmarks such as the Great Sphinx of Giza, the Trevi Fountain or the Statue of Liberty. The majority of art works presented here are from modern times, allowing an in-depth look at contemporary works by important artists like Alexander Calder, Nam June Paik, Jeff Koons, Eduardo Chillida or Ai Weiwei. -
Airports today are much more than gateways to cities, countries or continents. They have developed into city-like complexes and multifunctional systems, which while being set up to serve the needs of smoothly running air traffic, at the same time have taken on all the functions of a normal community: sleeping, shopping, work and leisure time and all that increasingly with 24-7 access. After an era of purely functional architecture, the nodal points of air traffic have become one of the most prominent architectural tasks of the present. Drawing on 60 examples, this volume shows the exciting multiplicity of contemporary airport construction and design. The projects presented in this volume include the newest large scale airports, as well as long term building projects, smaller airports at more remote locations as well as expansions and individual new functional areas like air traffic control centers, hangars or lounges.

As residing in cities is becoming increasingly popular among all social strata, multi-party residential buildings are gaining in prominence. While this building type focuses first of all on the design and conception of residential space, its height and façade design significantly influence the cityscape. Creating layered living spaces is therefore one of the most important and diverse tasks of contemporary architecture.
This volume presents a spectrum of apartment buildings with innovative interpretations of traditional layout types, and loft-style room divisions, up to individual solutions that vary from one floor to the next. The range of presented projects extends from small dwellings with three residential units up to apartment complexes with several hundred parties, from inventive low-cost one-room apartments to giant luxurious residences with more than ten rooms. In this way the selection shows the multifaceted possibilities of how contemporary apartment buildings can accommodate very different lifestyles on all levels. -
The trend towards environmental awareness is decisively influencing the way we live our lives. As Passive Houses have been conceptualized and became part of our collective consciousness, architecture stands at the forefront of an emerging modern eco-friendly lifestyle.
Taken back to basics, passive house architecture satisfies the desire to reduce the use of external primary energy. Depending on the climatic conditions, the utilization of different technologies, methods, and interventions is required, presenting a variety of challenges to the architects. This monograph portrays about 60 single family homes from across the world that showcase the great variety of exciting and at the same time sustainable architectural solutions. -
Conferences and convention spaces are enjoying strong demand, with new concepts and approaches being constantly developed. Depending on the occasion, there is an ideal event location, waiting to surprise the user with the most modern technical standards and creative designs.
This broad range opens up an exciting, diversified array of extraordinary design opportunities, which in combination with the latest communication and presentation technologies can contribute to the success of a convention center. The selected examples in this volume are by acknowledged specialists for convention centers as well as architects who approach this attractive planning task from different perspectives. -

The bungalow construction style is celebrating a revival. Its history began in India when British colonial administrators adopted a traditional Bengal building style for their summer residences. In the early 20th century, it became part of the American Dream in the USA. Today, bungalows combine the ingenious spatial solutions of apartment layouts with the autonomy of detached single-family homes.
Consisting of a single floor or one and a half stories, they are highly functional, environmentally friendly, and virtually free of barriers. The projects presented here highlight the various possibilities of bungalows in terms of size, spatial division, and design. All presented bungalows have in common the fact that they satisfy the highest demands of uniqueness, comfort and design quality.

Olivetti was the pioneer of 'business cards made of stone': The concept of corporate architecture emerged with the many buildings by this manufacturer of business products since the 1930s. It includes individual projects ranging from headquarters to production sites and fair booths, as well as company-wide design schemes like the Apple stores around the world.
The identity conveyed by the expressive power of architecture and design is intended to express the corporate philosophy. Communication strategies and the control of the interior and exterior image can be very public and obvious or more symbolic and subtle. Featuring very different approaches of architecture as a brand message, the examples from around the world gathered in this volume present the whole scope of this extensive topic.

As life expectancy is extended, medical procedures continually advance and competition between health care providers intensifies, hospital design becomes increasingly important. The idea that patients benefit from their surroundings has been acknowledged for some time, but it is only recently that this concept has become the key to architectural solutions when building or redesigning hospitals and health care facilities. Drawing on over 60 examples from across the world, this volume illustrates the contemporary approach to hospital architecture. Today, architects and interior designers are striving to combat the typical sterile hospital atmosphere with innovative and exciting concepts, whilst still, of course, maintaining a high level of hygiene and functionality. The projects chosen range from new private clinics to extensions and conversions of large inner-city clinical centers and specialized hospitals.

Rising rents, the desire for a simpler life, the aim for sustainability, or the wish to posses a relocatable home: These are just a few reasons why the market for tiny houses has become increasingly popular in recent years. The «Tiny House Movement« lifestyle trend, which began in the Unites States, has spread throughout the entire world driven by the construction and financial crisis. Even though there are many regional variations, all residences of this type share a major feature - on an area of up to 60 sqm (500 sqf) they provide all necessities of life. Nowadays, they are no longer designed by individual solo fighters but also by renowned architects who take on the simple yet challenging task and develop the enthralling room concepts and spatial solutions that are presented in this volume.

Shipping containers are the most conspicuous symbol of the globalized world economy: 20 or 40 feet of pure steel reduced to the essentials. Their qualities make them increasingly popular among architects around the world. As robust, inexpensive and universally available standardized modules, they fill the smallest building plots, house temporary cultural institutions, or serve as individual modules for complex building structures.
The "boxes" can be stacked, cut open, and linked, integrated into existing architecture, or incorporated into the interior design. This results in sophisticated design concepts and well-thought-out functional solutions. The projects selected for this volume reflect the great variety of the still young container architecture sector and show the enormous creative potential inherent in this universal construction element.
